It’s been a while since I had an Offtopic post. So here goes…
Last Tuesday I went to an okonimyaki restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam. Together with some friends at MM-BBS we packed our stuff and stormed into the restaurant with empty stomachs!
Ow yea, Okonomiyaki (ãŠå¥½ã¿ç„¼ã?) is a pan-fried Japanese dish cooked with various ingredients. Okonomi means “what you like” or “what you want”, and yaki means “grilled” or “cooked” (cf. yakitori and yakisoba); thus, the name of this dish means “cook what you like, the way you like”. In Japan, okonomiyaki is usually associated with the Kansai or Hiroshima areas. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region.
After searching for it we found it and were ready to eat!
It was the day after Queensday over here so the guy had to finish some things before we could sit at the open teppan-grill.
I was set and ordered the Osaka Deluxe: Osaka-style okonomiyaki with jumbo shrimps, scallop, pork strips, salami, cheese, shiitake mushrooms and squid.
And while we wait for our Okonomiyaki the chef showed us his magic. He was a German/Swiss guy married with a Japanese woman, and he can cook! He’s also a very talkative person and knows much about the Japanese culture. He’s easy to talk to and makes sure you’ll leave the restaurant with a smile. The restaurant is known worldwide and is featured in many articles. Even the Japanese know about this small restaurant in Amsterdam.
Popular Japanese TV programme featuring Japanese cultural ambassadors broadcasts Japanese Pancake World. Pokapoka Chikyuuu Kazoku introduced the Netherlands as the country with easy-bite delicacies such as harring, croquetts and cheese. The programme scored an impressive average viewership of 11%, in other words, roughly 14 million Japanese watched the show!

And then onto the first bite……….wow. It was really good, I could literally eat thousands of ‘m.
I kept the cliché oishi and umai~ for as it was,…..but really it was to good. The chef suggested we shared some of our okonomiyaki with each other to also know what the other taste like,….but I still liked mine better ![]()
I’m definitely going back, I want to taste more if this!
We then went to the Vondelpark to have a nice and long talk about Japanese entertainment. From Anime to Dorama, from Morning Musume to Monkey Majik and from the new panda’s joining Momusu to the concept of AKB48.
Yup ,….. it was one fine day.
