Woo yea, it’s Japanorama 3!
By mashing up images of popular culture, Japanese artists have put themselves at the forefront of pop art. Jonathan meets two of the world’s biggest names in pop art – Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara – and sniffs out Japan’s next wave of budding young masters.
Japanese Pop Art is arguably the most popular and influential art movement in the world today. Japanorama visits the two acknowledged J-Art masters: Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara. Jonathan finds Murakami overseeing the completion of a massive work at his studio on the Tokyo outskirts.
There’s a visit from an old mate, Japan’s comedy sensation Hard Gay, who turns out to be a wild and inventive artist. And did you know that Toys Are The New Art? We meet the creators of the coolest new toy-art on the planet: Bounty Hunter, Secret Base and the Bearbrick.
Plus, Jonathan butters up the performance artist Toast Girl, battles with the Paper Robot Man, and looks at Japan’s godfather of psychedelic art, Keiichi Tanaami.
